The Factory Movistar Yamaha MotoGP team completed a 1-2 in a rain affected FP3 at the Motul TT Assen, as riders sought to ensure their automatic qualification into Q2. Valentino Rossi continued his improved practice performance from Thursday to top the combined timesheets and head into qualifying full of confidence. The Italian beat the lap record set by Dani Pedrosa yesterday at the TT Circuit Assen, recording a 1’33.167 at the end of the session, after a brief rain shower had prevented riders heading out on track for ten minutes.
Lorenzo finished in second overall, recovering from sixth yesterday, to finish 0.108s behind Rossi. Next up were the Ducati Team duo of Andrea Iannone (+0.125s) and Andrea Dovizioso (+0.189s) in third and fourth respectively, who both made use of the softer option tyre available to them.
Monster Yamaha Tech 3’s Bradley Smith (+0.220s) finished as the leading Satellite rider in fifth after briefly leading the session, with the man who was fastest on the first day of Practice, Dani Pedrosa (0.283s), unable to improve his time in sixth.
Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda) did improve his best time from Thursday, but still found himself down in seventh, while Maverick ViƱales (Team Suzuki Ecstar), Pol Espargaro (Monster Yamaha Tech 3), and Cal Crutchlow (CWM LCR Honda) completed the top ten.
Riders who will have to battle it out in Q1 include Aleix Espargaro (12th), the leading Open class rider Stefan Bradl (13th) and Scott Redding (14th).
Check out the combined times from MotoGP™ Free Practice, Q1 starts at 14:10 local time on Friday.
