I already feel good with the bike

Back in Europe and full of confidence, Valentino Rossi started the Spanish GP on the right foot with fifth on the combined timesheets.
Friday was a steady opening day for Valentino Rossi as he comfortably finished inside the top five in both sessions. With his Movistar Yamaha MotoGP teammate leading the way, it’s clear the YZR-M1 is working well around the Circuito de Jerez and a podium challenge is certainly on the cards. Both sessions saw Rossi wrack up the laps, completing 41 laps on the first day and spending both sessions inside the top five. Rossi’s best time of the day came in Free Practice 2, a 1’40.282 putting him fifth on the combined times. This is a solid position but Rossi was 0.727s behind Lorenzo, proving that there’s work to do. With a solid base found, Rossi and his crew now plan on turning their attention to the finer details for the bike.
The second session of the day saw Rossi remain on the same set of tyres for the entire session to focus on improving his race pace. From the off Rossi was able to post competitve times and stay within a second of Lorenzo, who fitted new tyres for a fast lap. As with many riders, Rossi also experimented with winglets on his machine and felt that they helped to keep the front of the bike more stable around Jerez. Even with the winglets, Rossi is still not entirely happy with the front end feeling and knows this is an area he needs to improve on Saturday. Wheelie seems to be a bigger problem here in Jerez than in most other circuits and is another area which still needs a small amount of fine tuning.
Valentino Rossi: “I‘m very happy to be back in Europe, because here the track is fantastic and the atmosphere is special. It‘s always great, the Jerez weekend, especially with good weather and also the track was not so bad, because I was quite competitive from this morning. We started with a good base setting and I felt good with the bike. I was also quite fast in the afternoon and I was always within the top five, so this is OK. There are some points on the track where we have to improve, especially the feeling with the front, but I already feel good with the bike and we will try to continue like this.”
